Happy 61st Birth Day, India!

Even as we celebrate, here are some interesting nostalgic tid - bits.

“Tryst with Destiny”
Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech as reported by The Hindu in the issue of August 15, 1947:

“Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially,” declared India’s first Premier, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, moving the resolution prescribing an Oath for the members in the Constituent Assembly to-night.

Why, the midnight hour?!!

Recalling the historic midnight scene - — from The Hindu, August 15, 1972. H.V.R. Iengar, ICS, was Secretary to the Constituent Assembly, Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Home Secretary and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

And more....
